Meta has reportedly disbanded the team has been working on an in-house operating system dubbed XROS for its augmented reality and virtual reality devices. Since 2019, Meta has reportedly been working on its own operating system for XR — the collective terms for AR and VR — hardware. «We're building a microkernel-based operating system, which is the architecture that you want to segment the pieces to make it as secure as possible,» Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg revealed in an AMA earlier this year.
The company has already discussed its work on AR Glasses on multiple occasions. And later this year, the highly-anticipated Project Cambria VR headset is also scheduled to make its debut. The idea behind creating its own operating system for XR devices, as many experts point out, is to sever the dependence on Google and own the entire metaverse ecosystem, both the entry-point of hardware as well as the inherent software experiences. To recall, the Oculus (now Quest) line of VR headsets runs an Android-based OS. However, Meta's plans have reportedly hit a hurdle.

As per a report from The Information, Meta has reportedly disbanded a team of over 300 that was working on the XROS project to create an operating system from scratch for metaverse hardware. This follows a report from January claiming that Meta has pulled the plugs on its unified AR/VR operating system plans. «After Meta stopped most work on XROS last November, managers told staff that the company would instead focus on improving VROS, which currently powers Meta's Oculus Quest VR headset and is based on an open-sourced version of Google's Android OS,» the latest report says.
