Discord has helped create huge gaming networks of communities for games, guilds, and groups of friends, fundamentally changing the way we approach modern gaming. Last month, the platform announced that they were evolving their username system to remove the four digit numbers at the end, requiring everyone to use a completely unique display name, a process which appears to have started rolling out today!
TL;DR: Discord usernames are changing to remove four-digit discriminators. Display Names are being added so how you appear to other users stays the same. We will be assigning priority to choose your new username based on when you registered for Discord, Nitro status, and ownership of partner and verified servers. For more information see our Help Center article here.Changing over from the original four-digit discriminator to a unique username is a very simple process, though the option may not appear to everyone immediately. Some partnered server owners were already given the privilege to secure their usernames early, but it appears that Discord is now rolling out the option to the rest of its users in waves based on signup date and (presumably) Nitro subscription, beginning with those who joined Discord all the way back in 2015! With Discord open, use Ctrl+R to refresh the program and check to see if you're eligible! Look for the red dot next to User Settings, then check the Yellow alert next to My Account. Once selected, you'll notice a new User Settings alert, prompting you to select a new username. From there, its as simple as selecting a new and completely unique username, though you can still set a non-unique Display Name, which is helpful in the case of very common names that many people may try to claim.
