Warning: this article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 4.
Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 ends with some poignant losses, but there's one character death that the show may have hidden. The ending of Stranger Things season 4 seems the most monumental finale in the show to date. The most crushing loss in Stranger Things' season 4 finale is Max — and although Eleven managed to save her life, it appears Max won't be the same again as Vecna took her sight, broke her limbs, and put her in a coma. Yet among this emotional barrage of death and tragedy, it was pretty easy to miss and forget that Stranger Things season 4 may have also killed off another pretty important character, although their demise isn't seen on screen.
Stranger Things certainly isn't afraid of a fake-out death. Dr. Brenner seemed to bite the dust in Stranger Things season 1 but returned to mentor Eleven in season 4, and Jim Hopper is living proof that even if characters get a funeral and a big send-off, that doesn't necessarily mean they're dead.

During the military attack on the underground desert base, Dr. Sam Owens is handcuffed after his argument with Dr. Brenner. Owens tries to plead with Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan to spare Eleven's life, but his pleas aren't necessary since Eleven takes down the military helicopter with her telekinetic powers. While Eleven undoubtedly kills the soldiers in the helicopter and destroys all the military vehicles in the process, it seems like Owens and Sullivan survive the explosion since they were underground at the time. Even so, they're not seen again for the rest of Stranger Things season 4, which led many viewers to assume they died.
