After years of standalone episodes, South Parkmay have been pushed to change its format by the success of Rick & Morty. Despite becoming a more of-the-moment satire in its later seasons, early episodes of South Park were anarchic, genre-spoofing, gory cartoons that shared a lot of creative DNA with season 1 of the Adult Swim hit Rick & Morty. As such, it is possible that South Park opted to start serializing its storylines to avoid comparison with the successful newer series.
