In addition to a new story, the next update for Destiny 2 will see the resurgence of more than a few exotic primaries for PvE content. The update will bring an extensive number of weapon tweaks, including a massive damage increase to red-bar enemies (more powerful foes have yellow health bars) in PvE activities. News of this buff quickly had players looking through their inventories and planning out new potential loadouts that will surely shake things up in the endgame.
The first-person shooter from Bungie has three weapon slots: kinetic, energy and power. Although the kinetic slot has plenty of interesting exotic primary weapons, it's rare that players use their exotic in that slot. The energy slot has exotics like the bow Ticuu's Divination and fusion rifle Telesto, and the power slot includes the likes of Destiny 2's infamous rocket launcher Gjallarhorn. Primaries, especially in the kinetic slot, are in a tough spot as it's hard to justify their use over weapons that are much more useful.

Bungie announced the damage buff in their Feb 3 This Week At Bungie blog post. Beginning with the release of The Witch Queen on Feb 22, exotic primary weapons will receive a 40% damage increase to red-bar enemies in an effort to make them feel exotic. Primary weapons are any weapons that use primary ammo, including auto rifles, pulse rifles, hand cannons, scout rifles, sidearms, and bows. There are some exceptions, but it's generally any weapon that has unlimited ammo. In lower-level activities, loadouts are much more varied because weaker enemies allow for more experimentation.
