Sometimes, even nose plugs are provided to travellers with keen senses of smell, so that they don't pick up the scent of their surroundings.
The travellers are passed on from kakushi to kakushi on the way to the village, so not even they know where the village is. Furthermore, the kakushi are frequently changed to carry travellers, and the route itself is everchanging. The kakushi know where to go by following kasugai crows to the next point of transfer, and even the crows are swapped out from time to time. The intense protective measures are to ensure that demons do not find the village and attack.
