One of Marvel's most controversial characters has always been Deadpool, but even more controversial than the character himself has been the status of his secret identity. Generally, Deadpool behind the mask has always been accepted as Wade Wilson, but in Deadpool #33 by Joe Kelley and David Brewer, it's revealed that Deadpool isn't Wade Wilson. In reality, Deadpool attempted to kill Wade Wilson.
The real Wade Wilson was a Calgary teacher who married the love of his life, Mercedes, upon graduation. While on vacation in Maine, he met and helped shelter an injured man named Jack who was hiding out from his employers following a job gone bad. Momentarily the man reveals himself to be an assassin who decides to kill Wade and steal his identity for a fresh start. Wade Wilson survives the attack, but Mercedes isn't so lucky, which leaves Jack wracked with guilt to the point that his mind breaks hard enough to convince himself he is the real Wade. Eventually, Jack then becomes Deadpool.

The «truth» comes out when the real Wade resurfaces as a supervillain calling himself T-Ray who relays all of this information to Deadpool. Except, «Jack» ends up retconning T-Ray's whole story in Cable & Deadpool #39 by Fabian Nicieza and Reilly Brown once he regains his memories, pointing out how T-Ray's story doesn't make sense considering «Jack» is wearing the Deadpool costume when he meets «Wade,» before even donning the official Deadpool alias. Plus, there's document proof that Deadpool joined the military under the name Wade Wilson long before he could've ever met the real guy.
