Dangaronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka says that he may return to the series at some point. The man behind the murder-mystery series is currently at work on Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, a dark fantasy game set in a city of unending rain. The title had been revealed last month and is set to release for the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2023.
The first game in the Danganronpa series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, was first released by on the PS Vita in 2010. It was followed by two sequels, an anime, and a few spin-offs. The plot of each mainline title sees a number of high school students becoming trapped, with the only way out being to murder a classmate and get away with it. When someone is murdered, the surviving students hold a trial. If the murderer is found, the survivors continue their lives while the guilty party is executed, though if they are wrong, the killer goes free. Every student has a special skill or ability and are considered the best in that field. The series has gained a following over the years and has been released on a number of platforms since its initial debut.

In an interview with Twinfinite, Kodaka stated that he wanted to make a new IP, and since publisher Spike Chunsoft was not pushing for a new Danganronpa, he went for it. He did go on to say that he has a lot of ideas and wanted to create something new.
However, Kodaka did mention that he may go back someday. He admitted that Danganronpa is a niche series, and now he is able work on a bigger one, but that it would be cool to go back to the franchise at some point.
