Comedian Chris Rock's mother has officially opened up about Will Smith slapping her son during the 2022 Academy Awards. There are many good reasons that the 2022 Oscars ceremony could have been remembered. Jane Campion won Best Director for The Power of the Dog, making her the first woman in history to win an Oscar for directing and screenwriting. CODA star Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, making him only the second deaf actor ever to win an Academy Award. Smith himself even won his first Oscar that night after waiting nearly 20 years since his first nomination. Of course, all of these events have since been completely overshadowed by another event.
As many know, the real reason the 2022 Oscars ceremony will be remembered is Smith slapping Rock across the face after Rock made a somewhat tasteless joke about how Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock's joke was in reference to Pinket Smith's shaved head, saying she looked ready to star in a G.I. Jane remake. However, Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia which causes hair loss. Smith took the stage, slapped Rock across the face, then retook his seat, only to continue to yell obscenities at the comedian. In the following weeks since the event, Smith has seen a huge amount of backlash for his reaction to Rock's joke, and has since been banned from all Academy events for the next 10 years. Over the last month, many people, both celebrity and otherwise, have weighed in to give their opinion on the incident, including Richard Williams, who Smith later went on to win an Oscar for portraying that very night.
