Chocobo GP is a Final Fantasy kart racing game that features characters from the whole series. In the same way that the heroes and villains of the Super Mario Bros. series put their differences aside to take up go-karting, the Final Fantasy characters in Chocobo GP put aside their old grievances and hit the track.
The choice of character in Chocobo GP has more of an effect on gameplay than it does in the Mario Kart series. In Chocobo GP, all of the characters have special abilities that exist outside of the item/spell system. The player has a bar that fills up over the course of the race and once it's filled, they can unleash their character's ability. These range from damaging abilities, like Ifrit's Hellfire sweeping across the track, to speed boosts, like Chocobo's Chocobo Dash ability. Knowing when to use their abilities is a major part of the game, as unleashing a powerful attack or speed boost at the right time can be the key to victory.
