Bungie Hires Riot Animation Director For Destiny TV, Films, And Animation

You might recall that Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion earlier this week. At the time, the transaction was a bit curious as it seemed that Sony's purchase price didn't include any actual control over Bungie as a company. It'd gain control over Bungie's revenue streams, but that's about it.

Only later did we get an explanation for why Sony would spend billions on a game company that they couldn't tell what to do. Bungie brings its Destiny IP to the table, and Sony will help push it beyond being just a game.

And now we're getting even more confirmation on Destiny's direction. Bungie recently hired Derick Tsai, a former Riot animation director, to be its new head of development of Destiny universe transmedia.

The news comes courtesy of the @DestinyNewsCom Twitter account which links back to Tsai's LinkedIn page. Tsai's new role has him "leading projects and telling stories that extend the Destiny IP into new mediums including film, tv, animation, books, comics, and audio."

Tsai certainly has media credentials. While at Riot, Tsai worked as director on League of Legends' animated short films. Before that, Tsai worked as an animation director at Roku streaming, and before that, creative direction at HyperX. Other highlights include jobs at Universal, Marvel, Crystal Dynamics, Nike, Disney, Obsidian, and more.

If that wasn't enough to confirm Bungie's plans to expand Destiny into other media, Sony financial director Hiroki Totoki told investors soon after the acquisition announcement just what the company plans to do with Bungie.
