Sonic Team’s boss has teased more Sonic the Hedgehog content for 2023, following what he called “the biggest year” in the Sega mascot’s history.
In 2022 Sonic saw a live-action movie sequel, a Netflix series, and two games in the form of Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers. Speaking toFamitsu, studio head Takashi Iizuka said fans should expect the Sonic series to continue its momentum in 2023.
“Last year was the biggest year in Sonic history, starting with the film sequel, followed by the release of the new games Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, and the Netflix animation Sonic Prime,” he wrote.
“This year, we are preparing a second wave that will delight fans and maintain the momentum. We have already announced the distribution of additional content for Sonic Frontiers, but there is plenty more to come, so stay tuned.”
One potential Sonic tie-in planned for next year looks like a series of Sonic Lego sets, which were listed online during the Christmas break.
According to PromoBricks, a Lego blog that has repeatedly reported accurate information about upcoming Lego releases, at least five new sets from the franchise are scheduled for next year.
Sega has also confirmed that it plans to release three free DLC updates for Sonic Frontiers in 2023. While it said its plans are subject to change, the first DLC update is currently set to include a photo mode, jukebox and new challenge modes.
VGC’s Sonic Frontiers review called the game “the kick up the backside 3D Sonic has been crying out for”, describing it as “a truly accomplished effort that hits a lot more than it misses”.
