The last crashed and burned before it even reached its metaphorical lighthouse, but now Netflix is taking another shot. The streaming service announced that it is developing a film adaptation of the series.

The announcement tweet didn’t come with any names attached, so it’s still a mystery on who will be behind and in front of the camera. The tweet does say that it is an adaptation, but doesn’t narrow down a specific entry, only saying it will adapt the “franchise.” Netflix also didn’t attach any sort of release date or window, so it is likely quite far away.
However, the next video game entry in the series might not be that far away. Two different reports alleged that a new installment would be announced sometime this year and take place in “a 1960s Antarctic city called Borealis.” 2K founded Cloud Chamber in 2019 to make a new, so this would be the game from that studio. This would be the first new entry in the series since 2013’s .
The aforementioned failed movie was supposed to be helmed by director Gore Verbinski. Verbinksi was quite vocal on the film’s main issues: funding and its rating. He wanted a R-rated film, but couldn’t get the financial support for such a rating.
