The worst game of the year, by one of the best developers in the world, is ending as Square Enix shut down live service title Babylon’s Fall.
In theory, a live service game like Fortnite or Minecraft can last forever, enjoying constant updates while still being essentially the same game underneath. The flipside of that though, is that if a live service game is not successful its existence can come to a very swift end.
Babylon’s Fall launched in March of this year and yet it won’t even make it to its first anniversary, as publisher Square Enix are shutting it down on February 28, 2023.
The game will be removed from sale before that though and current plans for large scale updates are being abandoned.
As a result, Season 2 will run, as scheduled, until November 29 and then ‘The Final Season’ will begin, with the opportunity to still earn the ranking rewards of Season 2.
The game will be pulled from sale, both physically and digitally, on September 13, at which point sales of premium in-game currency Garaz will also be suspended.
‘As a way of expressing our gratitude to all our players, we plan to implement as many events and other initiatives as we can, leading up to the end of the service,’ says the official blog.
‘Through our surveys we received a great deal of enthusiastic messages of support alongside keen observations of issues and suggestions for improvement,’ adds the statement.
‘This really made us feel that we were able to create the world of Babylon’s Fall together with our players. Despite all of your support, we are truly sad and sorry to say that we will be unable to continue with the game’s service.’
