Apple has officially discontinued macOS Server.
This could be considered the end of an era. Apple has offered a product like macOS Server—which has alternately been called Mac OS X Server and OS X Server—since 1999. But, as The Register notes, Apple deprecated many of the more server-oriented features in 2018.
Apple itself says "the most popular server features—Caching Server, File Sharing Server, and Time Machine Server are bundled with every installation of macOS High Sierra and later, so that even more customers have access to these essential services at no extra cost."
The primary reason anyone would have continued to use macOS Server was Apple's mobile device management (MDM) service, Profile Manager, which has also been discontinued. (The company has published two support articles related to alternative MDM solutions.)
Apple says that "existing macOS Server customers can continue to download and use the app with macOS Monterey," but the next version of macOS will almost certainly drop support for the utility, so Mac administrators should probably seek alternative solutions before too long.
