American Idol judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan can't seem to agree on the fate of one of season 20's contestants in a new sneak peek from the upcoming season. On Sunday, February 27, the singing reality competition responsible for launching stars like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood into musical success will air its milestone season. The show aired its season 19 finale in May 2021, crowning Chayce Beckham as the latest winner, and since then, the show's judges have kept themselves busy. In November, Luke hosted the Country Music Association Awards and was the first solo host of the show in 18 years, while Katy and fellow judge Lionel Richie have both been performing at their respective Las Vegas residencies.
Despite their busy schedules, the three hosts were able to cut out time to return for their fifth season hosting American Idol. The three joined the revival series in 2018, two years after the final season aired on FOX. Upon its revival, the show transitioned over to ABC, where it currently airs. While all three judges will be present for the season premiere, Bobby Bones, who previously acted as the show's in-house mentor, will not be participating. In January, the radio host announced that the new season coincided with another show he was filming, so he was not able to re-join the cast. However, an American Idol producer revealed the show would instead bring back alumni to mentor the contestants; it was not revealed who the alumni will be.
