If you’re hoping to buy a Zen 4-powered Ryzen 7000 CPU on day one, there's some good news: AMD expects to have plenty of supplies on launch day, Sept. 27.
During Monday’s official event for the CPUs, AMD CEO Lisa Su briefly talked to journalists about her company’s efforts to improve its chip supplies during the upcoming product cycle.
"From an AMD standpoint, we have dramatically increased our overall capacity, in terms of wafers, as well as substrates and on the back end. So with our launch of Zen 4 we don't expect any supply constraints,” she said, according(Opens in a new window) to PCGamer.
The company also decided to sell the CPUs a month from now, rather than sooner, to help retailers build up more product inventory.
“Logistically it takes a little bit longer for things to get into region. So we're having this event at the end of August and we're on sale on September 27,” Su said. “One of the reasons for that time, frankly, is to make sure that we do have product in region so that people can really look at buying across the board.”
The company is working to build up the supplies after the great chip shortage made it difficult to buy AMD’s Ryzen 5000 CPUs two years ago. The processors remained largely out of stock for about four months before supplies began to improve. During that time, scalpers exploited the demand by buying up the CPUs and selling them at inflated prices.
Hopefully, AMD can avoid a repeat. The company may have also picked the Sept. 27 launch date because Intel’s 13th Generation Core CPUs are rumored to be launching(Opens in a new window) on the same day.
