AMC has started to accept payment via the Dogecoin and Shiba Inu cryptocurrencies.
Dogecoin and Shiba Inu are both memecoins that inexplicably started to gain traction—and therefore greater monetary value—with cryptocurrency enthusiasts throughout 2021. Coinbase data indicates that Dogecoin has a $18.8 billion market cap; Shiba Inu's is $14 billion.
Now both of those memecoins can be used to purchase movie tickets and concessions via AMC's mobile app in the US, AMC CEO Adam Aron said on Twitter:
AMC started to accept payments made with other cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin—in November 2021 via PayPal. Now crypto enthusiasts can also pay with memecoins via Bitpay, which supports less meme-y cryptocurrencies, too.
Will accepting these memecoins really make that big a difference to AMC? Probably not. But at least now people will have something to spend their Dogecoin on, and maybe the novelty of paying with cryptocurrency will lead a few people to buy more popcorn, or something.
