Teladoc is set to offer a new and very convenient way to access healthcare using Echo devices through a new collaboration with Amazon.
Teladoc calls it "whole-person virtual care," but essentially it's a voice-activated virtual care service in the US accessed through supported Echo devices, which includes the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show. It will be available 24/7 and initially launches as an audio service with "video visits" coming soon.
Accessing the Teladoc service simply requires saying, "Alexa, I want to talk to a doctor," which connects you with the Teladoc call center. A callback will then be scheduled with a doctor, which can cost up to $75 without insurance, or be completely free depending on what coverage you have.
“We’re excited to work with Teladoc Health to offer our customers an easy, hands-free way to connect with a doctor,” said Debra Chrapaty, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Amazon Alexa. “Whether they’re taking care of their sick child in the middle of the night or wanting to ask a doctor about allergy symptoms in between meetings during the day, we hope this experience will help customers find the convenient help they want from the comfort of their own home."
Although the access to a doctor isn't instant due to the required callback, being able to set up a call by simply asking Alexa is sure to be popular. Teladoc may find itself inundated with callback request quickly, especially if insurance companies decide covering the cost of these virtual consultations is worthwhile.
