Following Adobe's deal to acquire Figma for $20 billion earlier this month, the company is keen to calm fears Figma is going to change, get more expensive, and lose its free tier.
In an interview with Bloomberg(Opens in a new window), Adobe Chief Product Officer Scott Belsky confirmed none of those things are going to happen. Belsky said Adobe realizes Figma customers appreciate its simplicity and it isn't going to mess with that. Instead, the planned changes look to be limited to adding photo, video, and illustration editing, as well as the ability to link projects from some of Adobe's other apps.
Figma offers a basic tier that's free to use, and Belsky made it clear that won't disappear because, "we don’t want to fix something that’s working really well." The current pricing of $12 per month for Figma Professional or $45 per month for Figma Organization also won't be changing anytime soon, assuming the acquisition makes it past regulators.
Another key decision, which is sure to go down well with Figma's user base, is Adobe's commitment to keep the platform's file sharing without additional licensing costs in place. Another key commitment: nobody will require an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription in order to work on a Figma document.
One comment that may surprise Adobe customers relates to how unclear the future is for Adobe XD now. XD competes with Figma, and Belsky admits Adobe will "have to reevaluate where we want to shift our resources and focus" once the Figma deal is completed.
