Perhaps the most underrated game of 2020, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim tells the story of 13 high school students from various Japanese eras who all get dragged into a future war against hostile monsters while piloting giant mecha. That all sounds pretty typical for an anime adventure story, but the tale's timeline is a non-linear jaunt through various time periods, such as post-war, 1985, and far future Japan.
Pinning down 13 Sentinel's gameplay is tough since the narrative is told through multiple elements. Conversation is largely in visual novel form, while exploration of levels is done as 2D sidescroller. Combat against the kaiju using your team of robotic Sentinels is done using real-time tactics.
This mix of disparate elements makes 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim an entirely unique experience that hits different for each person. In our review, Peter gave 13 Sentinels a 3.5 out of 5 score, noting some pacing issues and confusing format for those expecting the game to fall into a straightforward genre. On the other hand, if you love a good story, 13 Sentinels definitely delivers.
