Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Development Didn’t Begin Until 2020

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews has revealed that when Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was first announced back in 2019, the studio didn’t have anything ready for the game except for the trailer.

For the sake of context, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was originally announced alongside the Xbox Series X/S all the way back in 2019 during that year’s The Game Awards.

When asked about how development on the game had gone, Matthew stated that the studio hadn’t really started full development on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 until after it was done with 2020’s Bleeding Edge.

“It’s been seven years since the last [Hellblade] game, but we’ve been working on it [Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2] for less time than that,” said Matthews. “When we announced it in 2019, we had that trailer, but that was really all we had on the game. Things weren’t developed beyond that point.”

“We pushed to do that,” said Matthews when asked how it felt to have the game announced alongside the console. “We were excited about the creative idea that we had around that.”

“The thing I think about everyday when I wake up in the morning is how can we make a great game, and how can I help the really wonderful people here get their game played by as many people as possible,” Matthews continued.

Matthews continues to talk about various aspects of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 for the rest of the interview, including supporting PC features, and audio improvements over the game’s predecessor.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is slated for release on May 21. The game is coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S, and will also be available through PC and Xbox Game Pass on day one. Earlier this week, the Ninja Theory revealed the game’s global launch timings.
