Xiaomi is getting into the electric vehicle segment and its first product is expected to be a Tesla Model 3 rival. Based on new reports, a picture of a heavily camouflaged test car is going around the internet, with rumours claiming it to be Xiaomi's first EV car. The pictures don't reveal much other than the fact this EV sedan has a coupe-like roofline as well as a low-slung profile. Xiaomi is rumoured to working on two EV cars, and the one spotted here is believed to be the Modena.
Based on the latest report from CNEVPOST (via ArenaEV), the Xiaomi electric car is codenames Modena and is expected to come in two versions. Xiaomi could price the base version of the Modena EV around RMB 260,000-300,000, and another higher speced version with a starting price of RMB 350,000. No launch date for the same has been shared but given that the test vehicle is already doing its rounds on the streets, Xiaomi could unveil as soon as next year.
The Modena will rely on BYD's lithium ion battery pack for its base version, which is said to be built on a 400V platform. The version is also said to include a multi-sensor solution from Continental, which will include five mmWave radars and a camera (for self driving probably).
The higher variant of the Modena EV will be built on the 800V high voltage platform using CATL's Qilin battery. This is supposed to take only 15 minutes to charge from 0-80 percent. This could help Xiaomi in a big way in its early days, provided it is able to install the required infrastructure easily.
Since this will be the higher end version, it will be powered by the NVIDIA Orin X chip, LiDAR sensor and self driving algorithms developed by Xiaomi itself. Both models will feature a smart cockpit powered by the Qualcomm
