Microsoft has long wanted to make inroads selling Xbox game consoles in Japan, but it's been a tough journey. The first Xbox failed to make it beyond the half-million mark, and while the Xbox 360 topped 1.6 million units sold in Japan, sales have dropped off precipitously after the mid-2000s console generation.
A new report in Japan's Weekly Famitsu (via VGC) celebrated Xbox's 20th anniversary in Japan with some sales figures. In total, 2,345,975 Xbox consoles have been sold in Japan as of February 6, 2022. By far most of those were Xbox 360s, which outperformed the rest of the Xbox family combined. We'll list the total Xbox sales below.

So what happened? Famitsu didn't say, but it might be that the Japanese became wary of Microsoft hardware after the Xbox 360 and its infamous Red Ring of Death. Or might be just that the PS4 was so absolutely dominant in Japan that Xbox One sales just didn't have a chance. The Xbox Series X|S has overtaken the Xbox One in terms of sales, but it doesn't seem to be making nearly as much progress as the Xbox 360 did.
Famitsu also shared the top-selling games of all Xbox consoles, and Dead or Alive 3 tops the list. In fact, almost half of Xbox owners also bought the Xbox exclusive title. Here's the full list for your perusal.
Although Xbox hardware might be having difficulty in Japan, that doesn’t mean Xbox software is suffering the same problems with Game Pass being readily available on PC. We already might be in the midst of a change in tactics from Xbox when it comes to competing against PlayStation in Japan.
