West Side Story could bring in as much as $31 million at the worldwide box office during its opening weekend. The original 1957 stage musical of the same name was inspired by Romeo and Juliet and featured lyrics written by the legendary theater composer Stephen Sondheim, who just passed away late last month. The first screen adaptation of West Side Story came in 1961 and won a whopping total of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
