Tech gadgets usually see a price decrease a year after being launched. But not so for the Ear (1) headphones from Nothing.
On Tuesday, the CEO of Nothing, Carl Pei, announced(Opens in a new window) his company is raising the price for the Ear (1) product from $99 to $149, citing an “increase in costs.”
The price increase may hurt the appeal for Ear (1), which received an “excellent” score in our review, which noted the earbuds offer “above-average noise cancellation for an affordable price.”
The good news is that Nothing plans on raising the price to $149 on Oct. 26, so interested customers still have time to buy the product at the lower $99 cost.
On Twitter, Pei didn’t elaborate on the cost increases his startup has been experiencing. But he said Nothing has expanded from three engineers when the Ear (1) was first under development to now 185 engineers.
“During this time, the Ear (1) has received 15 firmware and tuning updates, and is a completely different product to when we launched it,” Pei added(Opens in a new window). He also revealed Nothing has so far sold almost 600,000 Ear (1) units.
In addition, the company is preparing to release a follow-up to the Ear (1) with an event on Oct. 26, the same day the price increase occurs. During the event(Opens in a new window), Nothing is slated to formally introduce the Ear (stick), another pair of wireless earbuds that the startup says will be its “most advanced sound experience yet.”
The Ear (stick) earbuds look similar to Ear (1), but come built without silicone ear tips. That may indicate the new product will be cheaper than the soon-to-be $149 Ear (1) product.
