The Walking Dead waiting so long to reveal what happened to Alden (Callan McAuliffe) is a good sign for his potential survival in season 11. After being left behind by Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in a church in the season’s third episode, Alden has yet to make another appearance. For the time being, he’s facing an uncertain future in The Walking Dead.
When he convinced Maggie and Negan to go on without him, there was a sense that the show was setting up his death. The feeling that Alden was about to die was seemingly shared by Maggie and Negan, who appeared to understand that he was basically sacrificing himself for the sake of their people. In critical condition and unable to properly defend himself, Alden could easily become one of the show’s next causalities. But instead of answering the mystery of his fate in one of the following episodes, the series completely avoided Alden for the remainder of The Walking Dead season 11 part 1. Even now, there’s no word on when the character will return.

Though some aren’t happy with how the season has handled him thus far, The Walking Dead leaving viewers hanging with Alden for so many episodes could be an indication that the series isn’t actually planning on killing him off. It was commonly assumed after episode 3 that the show was building up to Alden dying at the hands of the Reapers or Pope (Ritchie Coster) forcing Daryl (Norman Reedus) to kill him. Either of these scenarios would have made sense, but the chance for either one to play out has passed.
