Square Enix has announced Valkyrie Elysium at Sony's most recent State of Play, a new entry in the Valkyrie franchise. We didn't get a specific release date, but Square Enix has assured us that the game will release at some point in 2022 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
While the game's trailer doesn't give too much away, the trailer description details a bit about a potential story. It explains that the world is on the brink of destruction and that Valkyrie Elysium will follow the story of a new Valkyrie.

The description also gives us a brief explanation of the game's combat, describing the game as an action RPG with fast-paced fighting that manages to incorporate the Valkyrie series' classic combo-based combat systems. Upon the release of Valkyrie Elysium later this year, it will mark the return of the Valkyrie series to consoles after a handful of releases on handheld systems.
Today's State of Play was intended to show off several titles from PlayStation's Japanese partners, and Valkyrie Elysium was just one of several interesting-looking titles that were announced. The showcase started off with the announcement of a new IP from Capcom titled Exoprimal, a mech game that has you fighting dinosaurs that will leave every Dino Crisis fan feeling very conflicted.
We also got the announcement that Returnal will be getting a bunch of free DLC that will include a co-op mode as well as a new survival mode that has Selene exploring the Tower of Sisyphus - aptly named as the tower is never-ending.
