Skull & Bones has had a rough time of it. First announced way back in 2017 but has been in development for ten years at this point, and underwent redo in a new direction back in 2020. So far, people haven't been blown away by what they've seen, but Ubisoft revealed during its quarterly earnings Q&A that it has a "very strong improved version" of the game, it just hasn't shown anybody yet.
As reported by PC Gamer, an investment analyst asked how many units the upcoming pirate game would need to ship (geddit?) in order to turn a profit, adding, "I'm asking because I've seen the reviews and they don't look particularly strong."

This is an unusually brash comment in an investor meeting. Chief financial officer Frederick Duget was unperturbed though, and responded, "We said in January, we've been very happy with the playtest that we've seen in early January, so we have a very strong improved version to show to players that they haven't seen yet."
This reads a lot like, "I do too have a girlfriend, she just goes to another school!" As Skull & Bones approaches yet another promised launch date, it isn't unreasonable for us to hope the game is almost finished, but we shouldn't hold our breath. The game so far hasn't impressed people in demos and previews, so it'd need to be a very improved version to salvage this shipwreck of a development.
Skull & Bones started life as a seafaring adventure game, but it now seems like it's been pivoted into a more live-service-focused direction. This isn't great news, as live-service titles are dropping like flies at the moment as they fail to retain players in a market that's quickly becoming oversaturated.
