Turning Red saw Mei and her friends doing everything they could to go to the concert of their favorite boy band, 4*Town, and this group has a deeper meaning in the story than you think. Pixar continues to be a powerhouse in the world of animation and keeps treating its audience to at least one movie per year. 2022 will see two very different adventures from Pixar, beginning with Turning Red, directed by Domee Shi, and which was released directly on Disney+, just like its predecessors Soul and Luca.
Turning Red took viewers to Toronto, Canada, in 2002, to meet Meilin «Mei» Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who one day discovers that, whenever she gets too excited or stressed, she turns into a giant red panda – luckily, she can turn back if she becomes calm and controls her emotions. This transformation is a family curse, but it can be contained by performing a special ritual on one specific night – but no so luckily, that night coincides with the concert of Mei’s favorite boy band, and to further complicate everything, Mei also has to deal with her overbearing mother, Ming (Sandra Oh).

Mei loves all those things that girls do when they’re 13: books about fantasy and romance (as seen with Turning Red’s version of Twilight), fan art, hanging out with friends, and music, and in Mei’s case, she loves the boy band 4*Town. Mei’s love for this particular band doesn’t sit well with her overprotective mother, who doesn’t allow her to go to their concert, leading Mei and her friends to take advantage of Mei’s panda to make money and go to the concert, even though it’s on the same night as the ritual.
