The stories for Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are defined by dead characters. Based on what’s known about the upcoming sequel to the 1986 movie, this will be one of several themes shared by the two films. Though much has changed for Tom Cruise’s character since he piloted the F-14 in Top Gun, not all of the challenges he’ll face in the second movie are expected to be different.
Over 30 years after the events of the first movie, Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell will be back for at least one more flight in Top Gun: Maverick. This time around, he’ll be serving as an instructor to a class of aspiring fighter pilots. As a result of his new role (and the amount of time that’s passed since the first movie), Top Gun: Maverick will feature a mostly new cast of characters to interact with its protagonist. However, trailers for Top Gun 2 and other information provided about the movie have proven that despite the new cast, characters from the original movie – aside from Maverick – will remain relevant to the story in big ways.

It's become apparent that Top: Maverick’s story will be driven by Goose (Anthony Edwards), regardless of the fact that the character died in Top Gun. This plot point will be vital to the sequel, which will introduce Rooster (Miles Teller), who is confirmed to be Goose’s son. His resentment toward Maverick over what happened to his father appears to be central to Top Gun 2’s story. Being around Rooster will naturally force Maverick to revisit Goose’s death.
