A new mod for The Last of Us Part 2 reimagines - and makes playable — the scene shown in the original release date trailer for the game, in which Joel was finally revealed to the world. The Last of Us fans were left in the dark for some time regarding Joel's role in the Naughty Dog game, but a 2019 TLOU2 trailer featuring Joel seemingly put players fears to rest.

Prior to 2019, The Last of Us Part 2 fans were unclear on whether or not Joel would feature in the sequel, with lots of fan theories positing that he was dead, or would die, in the highly-anticipated game. This changed with the release date trailer, which showed a conversation between Joel and Ellie, apparently confirming Joel would appear in the title. The exchange between the two main characters of the series proved not to be real, with Joel controversially being killed early into TLOU2's story. While players did get to experience the scene shown in the trailer once the game released, it was TLOU2's new character Jesse speaking to Ellie, and not Joel, rerouting fans' expectations.

Now, nearly two years afterThe Last of Us Part 2 released, modder and YouTuber Speclizer has made a mod that swaps some character models, allowing for a new playable version of Joel cut from the release date trailer. As shown in the video, Speclizer is able to play a sequence that takes place in Hillcrest, a location from the Seattle Day 2 chapter of the game.
