Rae is not the first influencer that has promoted a type of product that promises to protect against blue light emissions from computer screens. In October of last year, YouTube streamer Valkyrae promoted RFLCT, a skincare product that claimed to do the same.
Valkyrae immediately became embroiled in controversy following the announcement of RFLCT because of the brand's questionable scientific evidence to support its dermatological claims. RFLCT claimed that it was designed to protect the skin of gamers from blue light pollution. However, the scientific evidence of blue light pollution causing skin damage has been sparse, leading many to criticize the YouTuber. The streamer responded to the criticism on Twitter with a one-minute voice recording commenting that she understood the accusations and was equally confused and upset that the RFLCT website did not mention scientific studies supporting its claim. The influencer had also promised to address the controversy again, but not long after her response, Valkyrae's RFLCT skincare brand shut down.
