Eight years after it was first released, The Sims 4 is set to become free to play.
EA announced(Opens in a new window) that from Oct. 18, the base game will be free for everyone across PC, Mac, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. For PC and Mac owners, the game will be freely available via the EA app, Origin, or Steam.
In terms of revenue, this move may actually increase it for the game. The number of premium add-on content packs and bundles available is simply staggering(Opens in a new window), and EA intends to keep developing, releasing, and selling new ones.
Consumers who previously paid to play The Sims 4 are being rewarded for their purchase now that the game is reverting to free. From today until Oct. 17, they can redeem the Desert Luxe Kit(Opens in a new window) free of charge. The kit includes "luxurious indoor and outdoor furniture, inspired by the natural landscape of the Southwestern desert and materials like stone and wood."
EA Play and EA Play Pro members are going to receive an "upgraded experience" on Oct. 18. The Sims 4 EA Play Edition will include The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack, and the EA Play Pro Edition includes both The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack and The Sims 4 Toddler Stuff Pack.
For anyone who plays the free base game next month and wants to enjoy some of the add-on content, as well as paying for it, EA points out you may need an "applicable platform account (e.g. Steam), internet connection, and EA account." So just keep that in mind when scrolling through the masses of premium content available.
