While modern Assassin's Creed games have introduced several changes that have landed well with fans, there is one feature of the older games that ought to be reintroduced: classic parkour. Parkour and versatile movement are core staples of Ubisoft's historical action franchise, even playing a role in a fan-made Assassin's Creed-themed map in Fortnite. However, much of what made this feature fun and valuable has been lost.
Generally speaking, the Assassin's Creed games can be split into two distinct categories: pre-AC Origins and post-AC Origins. Before Origins was released in 2017, Assassin's Creed games were considerably more dense and focused more on urban locations such as renaissance Italy, industrial-era England, and revolutionary France. Origins marked a turning point for the franchise in many ways, mainly as it pertains to progression, RPG systems, combat, and gear, but it also vastly expanded the settings, with Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla all having much larger, more nature-oriented maps than earlier games.

This shift in setting, along with a broader change in gameplay philosophy, greatly impacted the Assassin's Creed parkour system. While there are several problems that the next Assassin's Creed should avoid, the series already has a great template to follow when it comes to in-game traversal. Reverting back to this original template, or building a new system based on its framework, would go a long way towards providing players with a more gratifying, enjoyable gaming experience.
