Super Mario 64's Unused Ghost Stage Spotted In 1996 Nintendo Report
Super Mario 64 is one of the best-loved of all time. You probably thought all of its secrets have already been discovered ten times over. Turns out that's not the case. Screenshots from an unused level have been unveiled which show Mario swimming away from some ominous-looking eyeballs.
The screenshots have been discovered thanks to some dedicated work from Forest of Illusion, Render Archive, and Nintoid (via Nintendo Life). The entities have come together to upload a copy of Nintendo's 1996 company report. Probably a fascinating read if you understand Japanese, but even if you can't, some of its images are enough to excite Super Mario 64 fans.

A series of screenshots in the report are from an early build of the iconic N64 game, but the bottom row of those shots are from a level that didn't make it into the final game. What appears to be a ghost stage with the added threat that the world's most famous plumber is underwater. Even better, the screenshots were clearly taken in quick succession, meaning when pieced together they effectively create a short snippet of footage from the game.
