Sky watchers are in for an incredible treat the next few days. But tonight, December 14, is going to be the most spectacular of them all. Why? It's because the Geminid meteor shower is very much live and it is expected to peak tonight. Not only that, but many astronomers believe that it is going to be one of the best meteor shower nights of the entire year. So, you absolutely cannot miss it. For those unaware, the Geminid meteor shower occurs when the Earth passes through the debris trail of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This year, the meteor shower began on December 4 and the number of shooting stars across the sky has been slowly increasing. While the shower will continue till December 17, the number of meteors will reduce drastically after tonight. NASA revealed in its blog post, “During peak activity and perfect weather conditions, which are rare, the Geminids produce approximately 100-150 meteors per hour for viewing”. And while a waning gibbous Moon can make it harder to see all of the meteors passing through the sky, it is expected that the Geminid meteor shower will be so bright that you will get to see a great show regardless. Interestingly, the meteor shower is coined the Geminids because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini.
According to NASA, the peak for the Geminid meteor shower will be at 6 AM CST (5:30 PM IST) on December 14. The meteor shower should offer a great view throughout the night. The last opportunity to watch the meteor shower is on December 17 but on that night you may only see a couple of meteors passing
