Spotify is the latest platform to test non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The music streaming service will let artists promote NFTs on their profiles.
As Music Ally reports(Opens in a new window), American DJ and record producer Steve Aoki, along with English indie rock band The Wombats, appear to be among the first to test Spotify's new feature, which is currently available to "select" US Android users. Those elgible few can preview NFTs on artists' pages before buying them from external marketplaces.
Clicking on an NFT (currently limited to still images; videos or GIFs are not supported yet) reveals a larger version and brief description, according to The Verge(Opens in a new window), which also teased an option to "See More" by visiting the NFT's purchase page.
There's no guarantee access to NFTs will roll out to everyone: "We routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve artist and fan experiences," Spotify said. "Some of those tests end up paving the way for a broader experience and others serve only as an important learning."
Spotify isn't taking a cut of any NFT sales that occur, rather, it's simply testing a way to let others who are promote them on its service. And this test looks to be a way of surveying users about their views on the cryptocurrency craze. Spotify did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.
