Sony's PlayStation hardware architect Masayasu Ito is set to retire on Oct. 1.
As Bloomberg reports(Opens in a new window), Ito led the engineering team for both the PS4 and the PS5 hardware, where as we more often hear about Mark Cerny who was the lead designer for both consoles.
Ito's career at Sony spans five decades. He started out in 1986 on in-car audio, but moved to the console division in 2000—the same year that the PS2 was released. That means he played a part in the development of the PS3, but then went on to lead engineering for the next two console generations. He also had a role in the engineering of the upgraded PS4 Pro.
Now 60 years old, Ito decided to retire and handed in his resignation. Sony posted a brief announcement(Opens in a new window) online confirming the resignation and revealing that Lin Tau(Opens in a new window) will replace Ito as Representative Director and Executive Vice President at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Kiichiro Urata(Opens in a new window) has also been named as a director in the engineering division.
Ito has picked a good time to retire. Supply chain problems have only recently started to ease, meaning a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro hardware revision isn't going to happen any time soon. The PlayStation 6 is also many years away. By leaving at the end of this month, the engineering team has plenty of time to adjust and plan for what comes next.
