Sony has signed a deal with developer Far From Home to secure Forever Skies as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive due out at some point in 2024.
First-person post-apocalyptic survival game Forever Skies launched on Steam in Early Access form in June, and when it leaves Early Access later this year, it’ll have a console exclusive debut on PS5 with a same-day release on Steam.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is providing development support and funding as part of the partnership for Forever Skies, Far From Home said.
Far From Home moved to reassure its PC players that the deal does not affect their version. “Forever Skies will make its console debut on PS5 in tandem with the launch of the full version on Steam once Early Access has been completed,” the developer said in a statement.
“Far From Home has teamed up with PlayStation to focus on making Forever Skies the best it can be for its console debut,” said gameplay lead Andrzej Blumenfeld. “So, at the end of PC Early Access when we're ready to release the full game, we'll be launching it on PS5 for consoles. Worry not though, this will not affect the ongoing development or release of the Steam version which will come out at the same time.”
The final version of the game will support both single-player and up to four-player co-op, Far From Home added.
The news comes hot on the heels of Sony’s surprise announcement that it will not release any major existing PlayStation franchise games before April 2025. While that leaves the door open for new intellectual property releases and minor games from Sony’s big franchises, it’s clear the company is on the hunt for “second-party” games to fill the gap. Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers 2 is a recent example. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth comes out soon exclusively on PS5. Externally developed Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, both out this year, are PS5 exclusives, too.
