Reportedly, Sega's after Fortnite levels of success and plans to reboot Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio as battle royale titles to achieve such an end. Sega's interest in rebooting Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio first came to light last year, when the publisher's May 2021 fiscal earnings report highlighted a renewed focus on revisiting dormant IP. Notably, a slideshow attached to the financial report mentioned a desire within the company to reboot, remake, or remaster globally recognized properties that have long sat on the sidelines.
For better or for worse, battle royales have taken over nearly every corner of the industry in recent years. PUBG ignited the flame, sure, but Epic Games' release of the Fortnite battle royale mode in 2017 was what helped the game type spread like an uncontrollable wildfire. Fortnite remains one of the top-earning titles year in and year out, with regular updates ensuring players of all kinds stick around long-term. That recurring revenue stream has proven nothing short of a boon for Epic Games, so it hardly comes as a surprise that other publishers aim to replicate such success with their own IP.

Sources familiar with Sega's operations told Bloomberg the publisher plans on rebooting both Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio as battle royale experiences, all in an effort to chase Fortnite's success. Reportedly, these endeavors mark the first in Sega's Super Game initiative, announced last year as a project that will bolster new revenue streams.
