The eagerly awaited remake of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic has been put in pause.
Bloomberg reports that the game has been delayed indefinitely after studio leadership at developer Asypr told staff that a vertical slice of the title had not met expectations.
Design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor were both fired the week after this demo was finalised. Both joined Aspyr in 2019 to work on the KOTOR remake. Prince had previously spent 17 years at EA's BioWare studio where he worked on the original Knights of the Old Republic, while Minor joined from QC Games. He also worked at BioWare for almost 11 years, contributing to the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, and also worked on Star Wars Galaxies at Sony Online Entertainment.
Aspyr reportedly told staff in a recent meeting that the game wasn't where they wanted it to be, and that work was being paused.
One source said that too much time had been put into the vertical slice, adding that the game's current direction was not sustainable.
The Knights of the Old Republic remake was set to release by the end of 2022, though Aspyr staff say that 2025 would be a more appropriate release date.
The remake was announced in 2021 at the PlayStation 5 State of Play Broadcast. EA apparently is not involved in the title, despite publishing the original version of the game.
