PlayStation 5 is the joint fourth-fastest console to hit two million sales in the United Kingdom.
It reached the milestone in 98 weeks, which is the same amount of time it took PS3 to do so, according to GfK data published on GamesIndustry.biz.
Wii reached two million sales in 57 weeks, PS2 in 60 weeks, and PS4 in 75 weeks.
PS5’s performance is notable given its relatively high price (which was recently raised) and the fact that it has been held back by stock shortages since its November 2020 launch.
“Given the stock problems surrounding PS5 it is fair to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2m units,” said GfK boss Dorian Bloch. “One thing that is clear, the significantly higher price of PS5 has not hindered sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium that is shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2m unit period. PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units.
“Xbox One took 104 weeks to reach two million, exactly two years, and Xbox 360 took 110 weeks, which was 2.12 years. Although the Xbox 360 was slower to this mark than Xbox One, Xbox 360 overtook Xbox One after three years and remains Microsoft‘s biggest install, with around nine million in the UK.”
Global lifetime PS5 shipments reached 21.7 million units during the three months ended on June 30, 2022, according to Sony.
Shipments also appear to be more plentiful year-on-year, according to recent analysis.
David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, claimed earlier this week that PlayStation shipments to the US in September 2022 were up 400% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, last week GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring tweeted that he had been told PlayStation had a strong September worldwide in terms of console
