First, you need to know that before you can romance Martha, you must become her friend by leveling up her friendship meter.
Martha is one of the most accessible characters to date, as her quests require very little work, so if you're just starting out in this game, consider dating Martha first.
The process of leveling up a friendship is the same for all characters, regardless if you can or want to date them or not.
To fill up a character's friendship bar, you can do two things: talk to them or gift them Moon Cloves.

You can talk to a character as often as you wish; however, the interaction will only increase the friendship bar once per day. This means that if you're pursuing a particular character, you should go and talk to them daily.
