A new graphic novel series announced by Dynamite Entertainmentin partnership with Curiosity Ink Media promises to explore Indigenous heritage through the blended mediums of comics and poetry. Helmed by two highly acclaimed poets, the graphic novel Thunderouswill tell the story of a modern teenager’s journey to connect with her Indegonous culture.
Thunderouswill be written by Montana Poet Laureate M.L. Smoker, a member of the Nakoda, Dakota, and Lakota tribes who has written a series of free verse poems focused on Native American history, language, and culture. The series will be co-written by fellow poet and independent publisher Natalie Peeterse. The artwork behind the graphic novel will be done by Dale Deforest with a cover by artist Oriol Vidal. The entire creative team is fully committed to the mission of this book which is to shine a light on indigenous stories while squashing negative and harmful stereotypes of Native American culture.

In a release by Dynamite Entertainment, the creative mind behind Thunderous, M.L. Smoker, spoke on the positive impact she hopes to have with the release of this book. “The importance of new narratives that are formed from the creativity, resilience and power of Native American communities are necessary to correct the pervasive and damaging stereotypes, misconceptions and ideas that exist in the country about us,” said Smoker.
