PlayStation has started to build a team to focus on games preservation, according to one employee that has been tapped to join the outfit.
As reported by VGC, former Kabam build engineer Garrett Fredley has taken a role as senior build engineer at PlayStation, one of the "initial hires for the newly created preservation team."
Garrett also worked at EA between 2016 and 2019, leading the preservation efforts for the FIFA franchise.
"Game preservation was my first career passion," Fredley wrote in a LinkedIn post. "It was my first foray into the world of software engineering / dev ops, and into a world that so many are unaware of. I was just a novice back then, contributing any way I could regardless of my inexperience. Now, I'm back to it, no longer the novice I once was.
"Thank you [global head of QA] Mike Bishop and the team for bringing me on board for this adventure. Let's go and ensure our industry's history isn't forgotten."
News of PlayStation's preservation efforts follows the company's announcement to bring classic games to its revamped PS Plus service in June. As part of the highest tier, players will gain access to a roster of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles.
