Summer is a big deal for a lot of people, including gamers. Younger and older gamers alike often have time off during the summer to devote to gaming, lots of new games release, and the summer game show season kicks off with E3.
However, things are a bit different this year. E3 2022 was canceled outright, and while Gamescom is still scheduled for this year, appearances and announcements from certain big publishers may be absent.
Gamescom to Return This August For Largest In-Person Gaming Event
The latest major publisher to announce that it's skipping Gamescom 2022 is Sony. An official speaking on behalf of Sony confirmed that PlayStation will not have a presence at the show. It's a bit surprising, considering that there are still some major hitters coming out for the PS5 in 2022, and additional games already have fans hyped for 2023. However, it's not the first company to announce this move.
In addition to Sony, Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive, and Nintendo have confirmed that they won't be attending Gamescom. With major releases in the works from all three of these publishers, fans may have been hoping to hear more about them during the event. However, it doesn't mean that there's bad news for those games.
Nintendo and PlayStation alike have both been revealing games on their own terms for some time now. Between the Nintendo Direct and State of Play, gamers can learn all about the latest games coming to their consoles via simulcast internet streaming, without having to wait for a physical event. While Nintendo still has a few major releases scheduled for this year, it notably didn't hold a Nintendo Direct during the Summer Games Fest, though there is now a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct planned.
