Pauly Shore has shared his reaction to the fact that his vocal performance in Pinocchio: A True Story went viral. The film, which became available on VOD and home video on March 22, 2022, was originally a Russian animated film that was redubbed and distributed by Lionsgate in the U.S. The film, which is a new adaptation of the classic Italian children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, also features the voices of Tom Kenny and Jon Heder. This new dub was likely rushed into the market to take advantage of the buzz around the two different iterations of the story that are coming later this year: Netflix's stop motion adaptation co-directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, and Disney+'s live-action adaptation of their animated classic starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto.
The trailer for Pinocchio: A True Story went viral this winter when Twitter users shared a clip of the opening moments. Although the animation style is clearly low budget, it looks exactly like what those who are familiar with direct-to-video animation might expect, as «Jepetto» (Kenny) puts together the wooden puppet Pinocchio and he comes to life. However, as soon as the puppet opens his mouth and says his first line, "Father, when can I leave to be on my own? I've got a whole world to see!" those watching were shocked. Shore's vocal fry-driven line reading did not seem to fit the character as animated, and while it's clear this was a result of his attempt to make the character sound young, TikTokers took to the Internet to hail this new iconic Pauly Shore performance of Pinocchio as an LGBTQ+ icon.
