First-person shooter Overwatch 2 has a bug that is shutting down PCs without warning.
Blizzard acknowledged it's aware of the bug in a tweet(Opens in a new window), stating "We are currently investigating an issue with computers restarting or shutting down while playing #Overwatch2." A Blizzard forum post(Opens in a new window) where the bug was reported nine days ago includes a number of accounts of PCs shutting down, restarting, freezing, or resulting in a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD).
A reply(Opens in a new window) from Blizzard technical forum agent Jambrix requests anyone experiencing the problem to post their DXDIAG for review, along with instructions on how to grab a copy. A user by the name of Azgorath(Opens in a new window) suggested it may be related to overheating, "my CPU (Ryzen 2700x) skyrockets to 100+ degrees Celcius and my PC shuts off to protect the CPU. It looks like it's some major bug in OW2 currently that’s making our CPUs get very hot in a matter of seconds." Another user thinks it's a memory leak in the game.
Later in the thread, Jambrix suggests(Opens in a new window) the problem may be related to "a specific situation where 360 Total Security was causing some PCs to shut down or restart" while playing the game and suggests uninstalling the security suite. Jambrix also suggested the cause of the BSoDs may be linked to Nvidia Broadcast or any program that uses RTX Voice.
Hopefully, Blizzard can get to the bottom of what's causing the problem soon and fix it without users needing to uninstall security software or turn off features. If it's due to overheating, then I'd suggest not taking a chance and refraining from playing the game until Blizzard releases an update.
