It seems inevitable in One Piece that the next member of the Straw Hat Pirates will be none other than Yamato, the child of the Yonkou Kaido, if they manage to survive the all-out battle that is raging on the island of Onigashima. Before Yamato joins though, it's worth taking a look at the powers, background, and history of this fan-favorite One Piece hero.
(While Yamato's gender identity is the source of debate among fans, they will be referred to using gender-neutral pronouns here.)
After debuting as Kaido's mysterious child, Yamato was immediately thrust into the heat of the battle, giving little time to explore their past, even if a flashback revealed important details on their upbringing. Raised by Kaido to be his successor, Yamato's life was ridden with brutality and abuse at the end of their demanding father, who went so far as to almost make them starve to death because, inspired by the death of Kozuki Oden, samurai and hero of Wano, Yamato decided to «become Oden», adopting his ideals and mannerism. Yamato was saved from starvation by a group of legendary Wano samurai and vowed to overthrow their father one day. For this reason, they allied with Luffy and the pirate-samurai-Mink alliance during the raid on Onigashima and even announced their intention to join the Straw Hat crew once the battle is over, to adventure on the seas just like their hero Oden did. What readers may not be aware of, however, is that One Piece's creator Eiichiro Oda might have drawn inspiration for this character from a legendary figure from Japanese history: Yamato Takeru no Mikoto.
